Most Marlins fans were waiting to hear news today about if a Marlins player would be heading to the disabled list today, and when the news finally arrived it was a bit of a shock. It was expected that Edwin Rodriquez would be making a choice as to whether or not Hanley Ramirez would head to the DL due to back stiffness, well Edwin made his choice and Hanley is going to remain active. Instead as it turns out the Marlins will be sending set-up man Clay Hensley to the 15-day DL due to a right shoulder sprain. Hensley just came off the 15-day DL on May 22 but he hurt himself again Wednesday night versus Arizona in a game we would be credited with a loss in.
Since the Marlins had already been carrying an extra bullpen pitcher and with Hanley being hurt the Marlins have chosen to bring SS Ozzie Martinez back up to the majors from Triple-A New Orleans. Emilio Bonifacio should get most to all of the starts at short stop while Hanley tries to get healthy, but Ozzie Martinez will give the Marlins much needed depth at the position as well as being another possible pitch hitter in late game situations. In his first stint with the Marlins Ozzie made an appearance in 10 games and went one for eight from the plate (.125) with three strikeouts.
